Online exams off campus

Digital exams or tests can also be conducted off campus and remotely. For this type of online exam or test, proctoring, e.g. supervision via video conference on the student's own computer at home, is currently not permitted. In this respect, such assessments cannot be categorised as written exams within the definition of current assessment regulations at the university of Konstanz. If you would like to conduct a written final exam online, please check the options for proctored online exams on campus here.

Unproctored off-campus online exams or tests can generally be held in two different ways. Firstly, an online test can be carried out on the ILIAS exam platform and secondly, a take-home exam can be conducted.

Please also note the general information on written online exams - please contact us if you are interested or if you have any questions. Further information on off-campus online exams/tests can also be found here in our ILIAS instructions and in the questions and answers listed below.

Important information at a glance

What are the advantages of unproctored online exams?

Off-campus exams or tests can make it easier for you to assess performance apart from written exams in your course:

  •     You can easily organize online tests even with large numbers of participants
  •     You do not have to spend time in your course on a performance assessment
  •     You do not have to request or make separate room reservations
  •     ILIAS online tests consisting of multiple-choice and/or assignment tasks are automatically scored without additional revision work

What purposes can off-campus exams serve?

Off-campus exams or tests are suitable for assessing knowledge and skills prior to a course, for checking learning progress during an ongoing course, as a compulsory component of coursework or as a mock exam in preparation for the final exam. Please note that off-campus tests and exams cannot be considered written exams in terms of legal assessment regulations of the university.

For which tasks are off-campus exams particularly suitable?

Off-campus exams are particularly suitable for transfer, application, and evaluation tasks, as well as anlytical tasks that go beyond a pure knowledge questions. These can, for example, also be tasks in which logical argumentation is required or in which case studies are used. Tasks that require the pure reproduction of knowledge, on the other hand, are not that suitable, as the access to other sources of information cannot be checked - in the sense of an open-book exam, this is even a desired outcome. In addition, given the latest developments and the availability of AI and generative large language models, tasks in an off-campus exam should be carefully chosen and critically reviewed.

How can students participate who do not have a suitable device of their own?

If certain students do not have access to a private computer equipped with internet connection, they can borrow a replacement device from KIM. If all devices are already booked, please contact us immediately.
