Standard procedure for creating courses and synchronizing course membership

How do I create a course in ILIAS?

By creating a course in ZEuS, you automatically generate a course with the same title and group members in the ILIAS repository for the respective semester.

The ZEuS contact person in your department needs to make the following settings in ZEuS so the process can work smoothly:

  • In the "externe Systeme" (external systems) tab, the respective courses must be selected in order for the data to be transferred automatically to ILIAS.
  • This tab is also where additional ILIAS course administrators like secretaries or tutors must be added.
  • All relevant teaching staff (organizers and instructors) must be selected as well.
  • If you encounter problems while synchronizing these persons' data in the ILIAS system, please make sure that their respective ZEuS accounts are all correct and complete.

Overview: Setting up ILIAS courses using ZEuS

Configuring courses in ZEuS

In justified, exceptional cases where the ZEuS system is not used in course registration, students can register directly in the ILIAS system if the set up allows for that option. Please inform your students accordingly.

Important: ZEuS is the standard system used for creating ILIAS courses! That means:

  • The list of students registered for a course (via ZEuS) is synchronized (in ILIAS) every day.
  • Students who cancel their registration for a course (via ZEuS) will automatically be deleted from the respective ILIAS course the following day.
  • During the registration process, the course title in ILIAS cannot be changed or amended. The title listed in the ZEuS system defines what shows up in the ILIAS system. This means that, if you want to change the course title, you must do so in the ZEuS system.

In justified, exceptional cases, we can generate ILIAS courses manually for you (e.g. if the course is not listed in ZEuS or if several ZEuS courses, like practice tutorials or lab courses, will be organized in one shared ILIAS course). In such cases, please provide us with the following information:

  • Course title
  • Department or organizational unit
  • Names of the ILIAS course administrators
  • Reason for the exceptional case

when you email the ILIAS support team.
