In the following FAQs you will find helpful information that will bring you closer to the KIM and its services and support your work.

Literature & Research

Library card

Your employee ID is also your library ID. You can obtain a library password from the loan service

. The following special passes are available for professors and staff:

  • Handapparat / Handset ID (unlimited loan period, etc.)
  • Semesterapparatausweis / Reserve card (compilation of the lecture-relevant literature)

Both are issued by the Lending Service counter. If you have any questions, please contact ausleihservice.kim@uni-konstanz.de.

Access from outside the campus VPN

Access to all databases and eBooks is possible via VPN; a VPN client must be installed for this. (Instructions)

Buying literature

If the literature you want or need for teaching is not in stock, you can submit a purchase proposal at any time or send an email to christine.rimland@uni-konstanz.de .

License databases or journals

In principle, cost-intensive purchases require coordination at the economics department. However, price inquiries and formats can be requested at any time from christine.rimland@uni-konstanz.de .

Fast ways of acquisition for unlicensed journal articles

As an employee of the University of Konstanz, you can have electronic journal articles that are not licensed by KIM ordered free of charge via document delivery.

Interlibrary loan:

  • Journal articles, books, etc.
  • The completion of an interlibrary loan order usually takes 1-2 weeks

Subito service:

  • delivers articles from scientific journals and books directly to your own address
  • Normal service: processing time maximum 72 hours
  • Express service: Processing time approx. 24 hours

Access to databases and journals

You can find the licensed databases at the University of Konstanz via DBIS, the database information system. In addition, the Department of Economics has licensed the Eikon database (Datastream). Accesses are distributed across individual business chairs and two accesses can be found in the library (computer pool behind the KIM advisory service). Journals can be accessed via the EZB. All licensed journals can also be researched via KonSearch. If you have any questions, please contact christine.rimland@uni-konstanz.de.

Access to literature

You can easily find existing literature in the inventory in the local library catalog Libero. This contains print books, print magazines, ebooks and audiovisual media.

KonSearch is a literature search engine for printed and electronic media. In addition to the data from the local catalog, it also contains journal articles, book chapters, books and much more. Direct access to the full text is possible if the University of Konstanz has bought or licensed the media. A VPN or registration in the university network is required to access the electronic inventory.

If you only need a certain part of a work, you can also use the document delivery service KonDoc. This service is free for employees.

Services

Bookable IT-equipped training rooms for small groups

In the library you will find rooms that can be booked for courses by lecturers.There are standard course environments on the PCs for members of the university and external parties, which provide a selection of software. In the course environments for specific areas, there are additional programs that any member of the university can use, even if you don't belong to that area.

What is the Teaching Lab?

With the Teaching Lab (12 seats), there is a room in the library available for the teachers to use be able to use flexible teaching settings. Furnishing:

  • Touch display (mobile)
  • Lecturer's computer, alternatively: connection options for laptop (HDMI, VGA, Mini Displayport)
  • Bluetooth keyboard and presenter
  • flexible furnishing (tables and chairs)
  • Mobile classroom with 12 laptops (Windows 10)

MediaLab & Mediothek

The Media Lab is a room in the media library/ Mediothek that teachers can use for seminars that require special technical equipment. Depending on the equipment, the room is suitable for up to 8 people. If you are interested in using this room for teaching, please contact the colleagues in the media library:

The media library offers:

  • Movies two film rooms with different playback devices
  • Language teaching aids
  • Workplaces with special technical equipment, including a "workstation for video editing, image, audio and text processing" and a "workstation with magnification software including voice output and Braille display control" for blind and visually impaired people
  • Rara reading room for viewing non-borrowable interlibrary loans and other materials worthy of protection
  • multiple scanners
  • and more

Remote access to licensed software

The KIM offers the possibility to call up the university standard programs of the computer pools remotely. If you want to use programs such as Stata, SPSS or Microsoft Office packages for your lecture without installing the license locally or going to the library's computer pools, there are the following options.

bwLehrpool Remote: Remote access to the course environment of the PCs in the library; approx. 23 remote PCs; Select course environment section PRW. You can access bwLehrpool from outside via the following website: bwlp.uni-konstanz.de. All you need is a current browser and your university account. Depending on availability, you can choose between remote PCs or remote VMs.

Equipment rental / media technology

The KIM provides students and lecturers with equipment and media technology that can be borrowed. In addition to projectors, clickers, headsets and the KIM MediaBox, you can borrow other relevant technical equipment for your teaching here.

Information literacy courses for students

In general, information literacy courses are created for students when the department of economics or professors register as required. If you want to offer a research unit as part of your seminar that provides students with basic knowledge in the field of scientific work with databases, you can make an appointment at any time. Do you have any questions about digitally enhanced teaching?

On the page "digitally enhanced teaching" you will find all information about digital teaching and digital examination forms. In addition, the eLearning team offers live support for all employees. If you have any questions about event recordings, individual media productions or streaming audio and video material, you can find information here. The team recording@uni-konstanz.de is available for direct questions.

High-Performance Computing

At the University of Konstanz, there are various opportunities for scientific computing. The state of Baden-Württemberg and its universities provide computing capacity at specialized locations and computing clusters. Within this framework, the bwUniCluster, operated at KIT in Karlsruhe, is freely accessible to all employees, researchers, and students in Baden-Württemberg. It can be used for both highly computational and less computational projects.

Furthermore, you can utilize interfaces like Jupyter to access the operated HPC resources. All you need is a web browser. Within the web application, you can edit source code in various programming languages, execute it, and visualize calculations.

KOPS - use the Konstanz online publication system?

KOPS is the institutional repository of the University of Konstanz and a service offered by KIM. As a scientist at the university, you can publish your publications online in KOPS. The documents are freely accessible worldwide in the sense of Open Access and are permanently archived. You can register publications in KOPS yourself, or contact the KIM by email (kops.kim@uni-konstanz.de), and the team will take care of it for you. The library services will then check whether a full text may be made freely available via KOPS in accordance with the publisher's conditions.

Research data & open access

The ZBW - Leibniz Information Center for Economics has launched a new Open Economics Guide. The Open Economics Guide is the tailor-made central point of contact for Open Science in economics and supports you with practical tips, methods and tools to practice Open Science independently and successfully. The guide includes, among other things, an easy-to-understand quick introduction to Open Access, Open Data and Open Tools, a comprehensive tool overview, a knowledge database and a glossary.
