New anti-virus software coming soon

At the beginning of August, the statewide contract for the anti-virus software Sophos ended. As a result, University of Konstanz computers have stopped getting software updates.

concluding a statewide framework contract. The University of Konstanz has now concluded its own negotiations for a new anti-virus product, and the Communication, Information, Media Centre (KIM) is preparing for the roll-out.

For cost-cutting reasons, the new software will only be available for work computers belonging to the university. These next steps are recommended:

  1. For centrally administered work computers, e.g. for the university administration, all the necessary changes will be made by the corresponding KIM team.
  2. For all other work computers, please uninstall Sophos and activate a different anti-virus system instead (e.g. Microsoft Defender (details below)). The new anti-virus product will be available soon.
  3. Unfortunately, the university can no longer provide anti-virus software for students' computers. In this case as well, please uninstall Sophos and use a different anti-virus system instead (e.g. Microsoft Defender (details below)).

For the commonly used Windows platform, Microsoft Defender provides a free and adequate solution.

More information about the roll-out and alternative solutions will be available soon on this website.
