Grathoff, Richard (30.08.1934 – 10.11.2013)

Richard Grathoff, born in Unna, completed his first degree in mathematics in Heidelberg and Göttingen. He studied with Aron Gurwitsch, Thomas Luckmann, and Peter L. Berger and received his doctorate from the New School for Social Research in New York in 1969. After returning to Germany, he received the professorship of general sociology at the University of Bielefeld from 1978to1999 with a research focus on phenomenology. In 1989, he published "Milieu und Lebenswelt" and "The Structure of Social Inconsistencies". From 1991to1994, he was a member of the executive committee of the International Sociological Association (ISA) and editor of International Sociology. He was decisively involved in founding the Social Science Archive Konstanz and was one of the initiators of the Alfred Schütz Werkausgabe.
