KIM has acquired a software licence for “Citavi - reference management and knowledge organization”. Researchers and students at the University of Konstanz can use this programme for study, teaching and research purposes at the university and at home.

Licence and installation

Duration: The current licence is valid until 31 March 2018.

Download Citavi Free from the official website (download file: 70 MB) and install the programme on your computer.

  • Register for a Citavi account at
  • Using a licence key, you can upgrade from Citavi Free to the full version of Citavi. Every university member can use Citavi Team without limitations on all their personal devices.

Access your Citavi account to find your licence information and instructions on how to enter it. The quickest way to access your Citavi account is by using the following link:

4. (optional): Settings file for local catalogues and databases

You can reconfigure the default settings with the settings file. The following can be adjusted:

  • The choice and order of the library catalogues and databases that deviate from the standard installation
  • Login data for licensed data bases
  • Connection to our link resolver

Follow these steps to import the settings file for Citavi:

  • Start Citavi and open a project.
  • Select "Tools” “Import or export settings” from the menu.
  • Select “Import”.
  • Click on "Browse" in order to select the downloaded file.
  • Click on “Next”.
  • Select the settings that you would like to import (we recommend: all).
  • Click on “Finish”.

Import from catalogues
To import books from library catalogues or other sources, simply click on the "Citavi-Picker" icon.
To import from subject-specific databases and export into other reference management software:

Use Citavi in a team

You can use Citavi in a team setting in order to collaborate on a Citavi project on local networks.


  • All participants will need to use the same version of Citavi for the team project.
  • You will require a drive that all team members have access to:
    Your Citavi team project must be stored on a drive that everyone can use. Available options include a jointly administered chair network or the file server at the university. You can save your files on this server and access them from home using a VPN.
